Step 1) Prep Area
Remove all obstacles and furniture from the area. Set up an area of about 200 to 400 square feet. This will be the area you start with. Cordon off the entire area that needs to be stripped by setting up the necessary caution/wet floor signs. Create an area for exiting the stripping area. VCT Stripping and Waxing. Step 2) Prep Stripping Materials
Line a mop bucket with a plastic liner, similar to something like our high density 10-15 gallon trash bags. This will keep the stripper contained and not allow it to enter the bucket area. The mop bucket can then to be used for future mopping purposes, and not just relegated to stripping jobs. Consult the necessary MSDS sheets for the stripping solutions, so you are properly acquainted with the hazards associated with the chemicals you'll be using. Step 3) Apply Stripping Solution
You'll want to sufficiently cover the 200 to 400 square foot area you already set up. Apply generous amounts of solution with a mop and let it sit for a few minutes to loosen the floor finish before continuing to the next step. Auto scrubbers are often the popular choice for stripping, because they can then be used to recover the stripping solution. If you are using an auto scrubber, leave the squeegee up and scrub the area once completely before putting the squeegee down and scrubbing again while at the same time, recovering the solution. Step 4) Pick Up Dirty Solution
If you are using an auto scrubber, after a few passes of just scrubbing, lower the squeegee, and recover all the stripping solution while continuing to scrub. If a floor buffer is your stripping machine of choice, you'll need to use a certified wet recovery vacuum that is specialized for stripper recovery like our wet stripper vac, which has a front mount recovery squeegee. Step 5) Rinse And Dry Floor
Use a fresh mop bucket, or remove the liner from the mop bucket you were using and fill it with clean water. Add 1-2 ounces of floor stripping neutralizer per gallon of water. You can also use your auto scrubber or floor buffer mounted with a solution tank to accomplish this. Just make sure to use a different scrub brush or pad than the one you used to strip the floor. Mop/scrub entire area with the neutralizer/water combination to try and neutralize as much of the alkaline in the stripper as possible. If the floor is not at a neutral state when placing your floor finish down, it will not adhere properly. Wipe down all basebaords and corners to assure all stripping solution is removed. Rinse the floor one or two more times with just clean water to ensure that all stripping solutions are recovered.
Step 6) Clean Up
All solution tanks, mops, mop buckets, squeegees and hoses must be thoroughly rinsed and cleaned out. If the stripping solution or stripped material, otherwise know as slurry is allowed to sit in the tanks, it can dry or start to solidify and ruin the machinery.All flooring areas need to be completely dry before moving onto the next step of applying floor finish.
