To help with pet stain removal, your carpet will need scotch guarding. This protective coating will help repel pet stains when they first happen and give you extra time to remove the stain.
The key to removing a stain is to treat it quickly. But when you can't get to it in time, you will need to use the right cleaner. There are many available commercial pet stain removal cleaners. You can also prepare a mixture with household ingredients you likely have already:
- 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
- Baking Soda
- Dishwashing Detergent
- White Vinegar
When your pet has recently urinated on the carpet, absorb as much of the urine as possible with paper towels or an old cloth towel. Lay towels over the stained area and tread on them to absorb the urine. Repeat with dry towels until all moisture is absorbed.
If the urine has dried and you're uncertain where it is, you can use an inexpensive black light to find it. In a dark room, the black light will highlight urine and other stains.
Then wet the area with a solution of 50% water and 50% white vinegar. Use enough to soak the fibers deep down. The acidity of the vinegar will neutralize the ammonia in the urine, facilitating pet stain removal.
Let the area almost dry. You can blot the area with towels or you can use a wet and dry vacuum extractor to remove excess moisture.
Next, apply a large amount of baking soda to the area and drizzle it with a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide mixed with a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. Do not use caustic dishwasher detergent. Dissolve the baking soda and work it into the carpet with a scrubbing brush or put on rubber gloves and use your fingers. Allow the area to dry, then vacuum.
The vinegar will neutralize the urine's ammonia. Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful oxidizer that kills the bacteria which cause the urine's odor. Baking soda also serves as an excellent deodorizer.
Since one of the ingredients of urine is ammonia, avoid using ammonia or ammonia-based pet stain removal products because they can encourage cats especially to remark the same area. Check the labels of commercial cleaners for ammonia.
If you don't have hydrogen peroxide, substitute a spray laundry stain remover. If a bottle label says 'Oxy', then it probably has hydrogen peroxide. First test your carpet for color fastness in an inconspicuous area.
It would also be advisable clean your carpets at least once a year. This will help keep your carpets looking their best and aid with pet stain removal. You can do this yourself or hire a professional.
If you have both pets and carpets, but don't want to eliminate either, resign yourself to pet stain removal duties. Homemade cleaners can prove to be effective.
